Doug Machado, Supt, J.W. McClenahan

Mark Watt, Supt, DPR

Abstract:

This will be a Presentation with an Extensive Period for Q&A with the Panel exploring lessons learned including:

·         What’s new and different and better in the field when the design is this complete and accurate.  The information presented will be the superintendents’ view of what they have witnessed and experienced in the field on this project. The areas that will be covered are:

o    Day to day and week to week coordination of the trades

o    Sequencing of construction tasks

o    Productivity, and crew-leveling

o    Inspection coordination

o    Off-site fabrication & deliveries to site

·         Metrics on productivity, crew sizes, general conditions, inspections will be presented.

Background

·         The project is a new 230,000 sq.ft. Sutter hospital, with complex geometry, in California’s most severe seismic zone, that has been almost entirely designed and coordinated in 3D, down to the inch wherever such effort eliminates or mitigates risk.

·         Construction has been underway for 21months, and will be complete in another 16 months. The foundation and structure are complete. The interior mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and low voltage systems, and the framing are collectively 50% complete.

Date and Time:                  Wednesday, April 13, 2011 from 6-9pm

Early Registration / Cancellation Deadline: Friday, April 8, 2011. There will be no refunds after this time. Each person must register and pay to attend the meeting and dinner. Please help us save time, expense, and avoid people showing up at the last minute… plan ahead and register early! We cannot keep costs reasonable and caterers cannot plan their food without sufficient notice.

Late Registration: Available after close of regular registration. Subject to availability.

Value-Added Proposition:

Trade partners, design partners and owners will learn what works better in construction and what entirely new possibilities arise from a fully coordinated, constructible, fabricatable model.

Recommeded Reading:

None of these is essential but might be good general background for those with the time and inclination

LCI Nor Cal Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Northern California Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI  provides local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a Community of Practice to learn, share, and develop a lean community in Northern California. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
